The installation location has been selected. It will be housed in the basement of the VUW Design Building on Vivian Street in the Photography studio. The Technological Red Zone will be shown alongside 3 other installations in the basement space. I spent a good portion of the day yesterday cleaning up and locating the model in the site. I think it’s going to look pretty darn fantastic.

The parts that make up my installation relating to my Thesis Proposal, are as follows:

CRT Monitor - This is an “older” style computer monitor. Although old in technology terms is circa 2003, a year in which the monitor I’m using (A phillips 107×4 CRT) won a design and innovation award. The monitor represents consumerism, and how we are prepared to discard things more frequently. It also cross relates to discarding the sense of Family which is referenced as one of the common values in each “Blue Zone”.

The Mannequin - This is another cast-off from the retail sector, but in a different way. If something no longer conforms to being “beautiful” it is easily discarded. It also represents the figure and role of parents in bodily form.

The Teddy Bear - The teddy bear represents the role of the child. Another consumer product, it is a classic that has been made in China out of the standard cheap materials. This one was sourced from the second hand store, and cost $2.00.

The Teddy Bear with Screen - This is the product. It is a teddy that allows parents to keep an eye on what their children are doing while they play through wireless technology. The children in turn get to view an image of their parents on the screen. In the display the view is of many different people that make up an “everyman” picture. They are all races, creeds, colours, sexes, and ages. Indiscriminate from each other by nature of the high frames per second that each slide displays.

Together they make up a dialogue that seeks to speak to the Thesis Proposal.

I managed to source a mannequin, after much research and dead-ends. If I was going to purchase one depending on the quality it would have cost between $300 - $800. As it is I spent a day on the trail stomping around shops, and finally chanced upon a broken model at Max. It was complete apart from some fairly superficial damage to the arm and body, and some overall muntage from general use.

So I took the mannequin down to the workshop, and started combining the model with the other parts.

The following shows the process:

Some of the tacit information available by way of our parents and Grandparents, points at the drift in society towards materialism and the dichotomy of needs versus wants. This is simply to do with comments in my own family about the working situations of families these days, and the need for both parents of a child to work - usually putting the child(ren) in daycare so they can do so. It is hard to find actual statistics for this situation as they’ve only been keeping statistics on family income in very recent years - hence the need to focus to tacit knowledge.

As our culture becomes more and more focused on “keeping up with the Jones” there is a need for more family income. Items like an ipod become “percieved needs” as we’re presented with more and more material objects, and told by the media that we must have these things, subliminally through happy people from happy families sporting the items.

One of the most recent and controversial adverts (if only for the commentary on how far away the microsoft brand was from what the adverts displayed) is the following:

A process

Chernoff face Tests

A few simple polygons show a gammit of emotion. The following are rendered .swf files programmed to cycle through polygons and display an active expression according to a Chernoff Face.

Sequencing Facials

The following tests were completed using a portrait image sequence displaying lighting composition for photography.

This led to sequencing portraits of different people to get an idea of the way that features blended together at different speeds and frame rates.

Then further to the portraits in a more Chernoff style of mixing up elements the natural progression seemed to tend towards a more mash-up style of image where the elements were visual.

I have been researching Chernoff Faces and Mike Kelley at the suggestion of my last commentary:

Marcia’s Comments:
This investigation into Chumby-embodiment- and stuffed animal as interface reminded me of Mike Kelly’s work- his site ‘destroy all monstors’ http://www.mikekelley.com/ might give you some ideas- and references- also, the concept of synesthesia and multi-sensory joinings might lead you into interesting territory- a shame it didn’t work with wifi- that would make it mobile-

Doug’s comments:
Great turnaround. I would really like to have seen the face that is on your blog, inside of that little creature. Also – I found the face-interface to be a bit off. I had to click just to the left of the face to range through the emotions. I already gave you the Chernoff face link, but here it is again:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernoff_face

The Mike Kelley information is really fascinating and from an infrastructure perspective is a heady pith of a precident that spans thickly into my hardware concepts. Mike Kelley is the sort of artist who obsesses with the everyday by tearing it new asshole. And I mean that from an artistic rather than glib point of view. He states,

“I’m an avant-gardist. We’re living in the postmodern age, the death of the avant-garde. So all I can really do now is work with this dominant culture and flay it, rip it apart, reconfigure it, expose it.”

This image of Kelley’s ‘Frankenstein’ (1989) depicts his re-engineering of soft toys to form an altogether more inhuman yet human piece. it is completely reminiscent of the cutting room floor scene from the re-engineering of the soft toy prototype that gave its former life to serve as the gory fluff hole within which to insert a hacked piece of hardware.

The Chernoff Faces sync with the other software side of the project. Through the use of basic informative shapes arranged to emulate facial features, it is possible to convey a vast amount of information by engaging with everyday metaphors that are viscerally engrained into our psyche. These take the form of portraiture with features that come together to convey the anger, happiness, discomfort and entire range of facial emotions that the simple elements confer. The visualisation that the software conveys through the use of a few basic polygons speaks volumes.

It runs between 9am - 5:30pm Pacific Standard Time daily, so it may be off depending on what time you view it. I have been looking at different ways to get moving images onto my Chumby and thinking about what sort of interface might represent a human form in a more complete way. I think that webcams are definitely one way of doing this. Skype is also an option, but becasue it is closed proprietry software, itmeans there is no option to hack it and appropriate for my exact purposes. Pretty glad to get the .swf running though. Here is the source code with some of the cam options inserted.
//url = "http://os1.prod.camzone.com/still?cam=8"; // link to the cam feed //url = "http://www.niwascience.co.nz/services/free/cam-era/raglana/raglana.jpg?sq_content_src=%2BdXJsPWh0dHAlM0ElMkYlMkZzZXJ2aWNlcy5uaXdhLmNv Lm56JTJGc2VydmljZXMlMkZjYW0tZXJhJTJ Gc2l0ZXMlMkZyYWdsYW53ZWJhJTJGUkFfV18yMDA4XzA5Xz A2XzEzXzAwXzI1LmpwZyZhbGw9MQ%3D %3D"; //url = "http://www.citynews.co.nz/webcams/bayfair.php"; // link to the cam feed url = "http://os9.prod.camzone.com:80/frame?name=Shamu&camlabel=&intrographic=camzone_320_seaworld.jpg";delay = 1000; // one second refresh rate // // this handles simple JPEG-based webcams // // set 'url' to URL of JPEG image feed // set 'delay' to frame rate in ms (best to avoid faster than 1s) // create library item with linkage "proxy" to hold image // // Note that the site hosting the cam must allow Flash access // from arbitrary domains, typically by using a "crossdomain.xml" file // // This movie also counts on the images being exactly 320x240 - you may bee to get fancier // if they're not. // // // The strategy here is to have three "proxy" movie clips that // each load and rotate to front. If you have just one clip, then // it will go blank during the load. Having three also allows // some latency in the response for the image load. // createEmptyMovieClip("image0",0); // create some initial empty images createEmptyMovieClip("image1",1); createEmptyMovieClip("image2",2); index=0; // // onEnterFrame-based loading // // We aren't using setInterval/clearInterval to avoid // potential memory/timer leaks in the Flash player // then = 0; // long, long ago.... this.onEnterFrame = function () { now = (new Date()).getTime(); // get current time in ms from the epoch if (now-then>delay) { // enough time elapsed since last image loaded? doLoadImage(); // yup, load image then = now; // and reset the last load time } } // // rotate the images, load the next one // function doLoadImage() { var name0 = 'image'+(index%3); var name1 = 'image'+((index+1)%3); var name2 = 'image'+((index+2)%3); var m0 = eval(name0); var m1 = eval(name1); var m2 = eval(name2); m0.swapDepths(0); // rotate the clips m1.swapDepths(1); m2.removeMovieClip(); // throw away the oldest one createEmptyMovieClip(name2,2); // make a new one m2 = eval(name2); m2.loadMovie(url); // load image into it index = (index+1)%3; }
Massive help from: ChumbyWIKI
